Character format controls palette

if highlight text , go character format controls palette , put cursor in space below or space above box , type number add space, replaces actual text in actual document highlighted number?! else? i've updated latest indesign

yes issue mentioned indeed there.

as workaround can try following:-

 

1. instead of text selection, if place insertion pointer in paragraph, works fine or

2. can click (or select) field , come desired field.
