Multiple Artboards - "Save As" PDF One Artboard - File size huge!

hey everyone,

 

i have ai file have created multiple artboards (different size images of same image).

 

when "save as" pdf , choose 1 art board, file size same though saving entire ai file. if delete other art on art boards, file size becomes reasonable.

 

for example.

the original ai file 75mb.

if "save as" art board 4 pdf = 75mb

if delete other art , "save as" pdf = 17.5mb

 

this frustrating because assumed purpose of exporting 1 artboard ignored other art boards. doesn't seem case , causing me issues. rather not have delete other art every time save file. ideas?
