Creating a big gallery with several categories and undercategories

hi, everyone!

 

hoping i'm @ right spot asking here.

 

i'm trying build huge gallery needs have lot of categories along under categories.

this looks now: gallery

 

as it's alright if use computer. it's not beautiful trick. on phone or other small screen starts looking horrible though.

my main issue pictures never scale down show smaller version of themselves. instead crop automatically, if choose fill or not in settings.

 

so questions are:

- how can make sure photos in gallery gets smaller without cropping when shown on smaller screen?

- have experience of building large gallery or have found widget trick? (i've found several 1 category, need subcategory under that: year --> day --> *pictures*)

have set images responsive width , height?

 

there many gallery widgets can choose on page.
