Should stalls and hangs be expected when editing from an external hard drive?

i haven't had issue until created multi camera sequence , began switching , forth between dual camera shots.

now first opening segment hangs in multiple spots 2 or 3 seconds on playback. after getting further along seems play fine.

would cause being edited through ext. hard drive?

i doing via ext hard drive before without issues.

possible. what's connection external drive, , of course, what's drive?
