starting new computer current mobo bit dust, , though unplanned in our biz budgetary cycle, we'll build new me & cascade down replaced mobo (it's still under warranty) , shift other things on 3 different workstations.

 

i video, including prpro heavy use of lumetri, still speedgrade, plus prelude & audition. occasional work in ae although increase. bit in resolve, getting hand-in within resolve-o-sphere.

 

not huge income producer not interested in twin-xeon/128gb ram rig ... well, interested, not in cost! ... typical budget build. tradeoffs.

intel core i7-6700k 8m skylake quad-core 4.0 ghz

asus x99-a lga 2011-v3 intel x99 sata 6gb/s usb 3.0 atx intel motherboard

 

for around $550.

 

another,

 

intel core i7-5820k haswell-e 6-core 3.3 ghz

asus x99-e ws/usb 3.1 lga 2011-v3 intel x99 sata 6gb/s usb 3.1 usb 3.0 ceb motherboard

 

for around $832.

 

i'm planning on keeping gtx970/4gb gpu; running ssd's os & cache, , m.2 drive we'd acquired also, plus several more internal drives in mix of ssd/spinning. i've got 32gb ram. ddr4.

 

comments ... bill gehrke, roninedits, dave merchant, ecbowen ... others chime in of course. dollars doughnuts, what's operating difference 1080p, , occasional 4k/6k material? not of warp stabilizer run video de-noising some.

the i7-6700k skylake not compatible x99 , i7-5820k last gen. dual xeon promoted/advertised intel way sell expensive gear, works in special workflows.

 

the i7-6800k 6 core 1080p , entry level 4k. $680 basic x99 mbd.

the i7-6900k 8 core 4k , entry level 6k. $1300-1700 depending on x99 motherboard.

you want system builder lite medium overclock these best performance, , can still done on air noctua d15s.

 

you can use gpu-z see gtx 970 doing. chances if grading alot , using gpu denoising, davinci resolve, may find gtx 970 lacking.
