i'm doing training purposes, trying explore functions of photoshop haven't used yet. until now, i've used photo processing, touching scans of old documents class, , basic painting. i'm familiar of photoshop jargon, specific task (restoring) new me.

as whole idea behind project learn, no need lend me hand, although it's nice if thinking ^^

i've tried formulate objective procedure: i want bring image close original intention of artist possible. little existing information possible should lost.

as kind of project, time of little relevance, i'm trying refrain often-used photoshop solutions produce "good enough" result. i'll spend time needs become possible. question is, tools should use.

my main concern large water damage in lower half of image. i'd preserve fine structure of laid paper (including splinters , similar things others remove), , abstain clone , pattern stamps as possible, i'm wondering if there way filter these stains out, @ least on larger areas. i've tried manual color correction, failed of yet. wasn't able select stains, , color correction (which i'm able use reasonably photos) produced ugly results.

that first question guys, more sure follow

i think images need take time , use multiple adjustment layers , masks. use of channels helps. started out making duplicate of blue channel, showed stain. used color range narrow down on stained area. using color range multiple times target off areas helps. used hue/saturation neutralize areas. quick sample:
