basic tips regarding system crashes and slow operating

hello, i'm frequent user of adobe premiere pro cs6 edit moderately complicated videos. don't know technical info/lingo know how i'm trying do... apologize in advance if sound plebian. looking general advice on crashing , slow operating.

i'm using mac machine, macbook pro 2013 running osx 10.9.5,

 

processor  2.6 ghz intel core i5

 

memory  8 gb 1600 mhz ddr3

 

graphics  intel hd graphics 4000 1024 mb

 

with 56 gb free on hard drive , 8 gb of memory ("your mac contains 2 memory slots, each of accepts 1600 mhz ddr3 memory module.")

 

premiere has worked fine in past, lately it's getting slower , slower, render times slow, , i'm playing recorded video in premiere , it's glitching. going on? why playing video hard on machine? open same video (unedited, raw) in quicktime , plays smoothly.

 

i use basic advice on whether there's can rectify situation on computer, or if it's matter of computer getting old , not being able handle premiere anymore. i'm worried i'm going have buy new 1 if want keep making videos. there else can do? what's best course of action? opening more space on hard drive? trying run program external hard drive? screwed? think efficient use of time trying troubleshoot this?
