Adding color to greyscale images

i feel idiot can't this.

 

ever since got creative cloud version of indesign can't add color placed greyscale image. on earlier versions place greyscale tif, use direct selection tool, choose swatch , color. nothing works. can enlighten me?

p.s. apologize if has been answered previously...all searches i've done brought answers earlier versions.

you can still - did on project other day, use greyscale jpegs, try file format?
