Can't get ASIO driver to work with S/PDIF input

this adobe audition cs6 question. i've installed new internal sound card in windows 10 pc. has optical s/pdif input (and output). trying record audio bd player using optical input , sound card's asio driver. cs6 won't let me - sees sound card's asio driver, sure, when select it, old "device not opened" error message , cs6 won't start. can record flipping on mme , using sound card's s/pdif input offered under heading.

 

i have theory why can't use sound card's asio driver. think it's because audition player , recorder , won't function asio driver unless input , output both connected same device.

 

is right?

 

i don't have problem using sound card's asio driver when playing jriver using sound card's driver. theory that's because jriver playback app.

what bit rate recording at? if works mme, there's chance microsoft doing on-the-fly sample rate conversion it's not telling about. rate mismatch takes; it's unlikely sync-related, audition can choose gets sync from. if idea correct, getting correct input - not @ appropriate rate.
