Multiple compositions with audio react

hey guys, forgive n00b-ness. i've started working after effects , having problem bringing few compositions i've made , having them work single piece of audio.

 

i've made 3 separate compositions (going through tutorials online) react audio. these 30-second pieces each. i've done these three, want create new composition , bring of other 3 files main 1 , apply effects new piece of audio, 30 minutes long (it's dj mix i've created). i've been messing around , trying copy+paste , import compositions , can them imported - visually looks right, can't change way each composition reacts audio, i.e. when try change mp3 file in each effect control doesn't show new mix, old file used when created movies. i'm sure simple fix i'm wondering if can point me in right direction. thanks!

not sure asking. replacing audio source file in project window or timeline? how art "react" audio? expressiosn? else? need explain better. feeling assume change "master" layer in parent comp , wil magically change child compositions, ae isn't case.
